“I can close my eyes and recall how bright her face was,” said one of Butler's professors, Yasmeen Chism. In the fall of 2016, Butler was a sophomore at New Jersey City University, the first in her family to attend college. “When I said, ‘How can you bartend? You’re not even 21,’ Sarah told me, ‘I’m just going to be ready, Miss Shirlise.' ” She worked as a lifeguard, babysat and paid her own way through bartending classes, though she was too young to actually work in a bar, recalled Shirlise McKinley-Wiggins, the dance school’s founder. Her enthusiasm extended beyond the dance studio. "Even when we were just hanging out, Sarah would be over in the corner, twirling around." Her friend Sophia Nigro, 18, recalled fun sleepovers at the Butlers', where Sarah did her makeup and taught her dance steps. She led the Montclair High School dance team and the traveling troupe at Premiere Dance Theatre, winning the dance school's scholarship and finishing third at Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Sarah was the bubbly, driven middle child. Despite having grown up surrounded by water in Jamaica, she had never learned to swim. The Butler girls took dance and swim lessons, and eventually worked as lifeguards at the Montclair YMCA, a point of pride for Lavern. In his free time, Victor worked on his golf swing at the public course in nearby Belleville. Evenings, Lavern cooked dinner while Victor, a teetotaler, mixed cocktails at the Glen Ridge Country Club, where stock analysts and bond traders unwound after their train rides home from Wall Street. Lavern worked days, looking after children more privileged than hers, while Victor got their girls to school and activities. Their three daughters, Bassania, Sarah and Aliyah, did well in school, and the family had a close community centered around their church. The Butlers' rent went up, too, but the family stayed. The wide lawns and mansions of Upper Montclair seemed farther away, but South End still offered access to the same good school system. ![]() Ali during the trial of Khalil Wheeler-Weaver, who is charged in the death of their daugter Sarah Butler, 20, of Montclair, photographed in Essex County Superior Court in Newark, NJ on 10/31/19. The Butlers moved to Montclair two decades ago, seeking better opportunities for their three daughters in the racially and economically diverse suburb just west of Newark. The small, simple houses in their 4th Ward neighborhood had more in common with neighboring Orange, the working-class, mostly African-American town where Wheeler-Weaver grew up. Targeting Butler was the killer's "fatal mistake," Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Adam Wells said during the trial. The three other victims - two murdered and one who narrowly escaped - were all sex workers, women on the margins of society, often dismissed by those in authority. Butler, a 20-year-old college student, came from a stable, two-parent household and a community in Montclair that swung into action when she disappeared. "He messed with the wrong girl,” Lavern Butler said at a news conference in December, after a jury declared Wheeler-Weaver guilty. “Sarah was well-loved.” From left, Aliyah Butler, Bassania Daley and Sarah Butler. ![]() Sarah served on the UTS China Research Centre Advisory Board and earlier worked as a research scientist with the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (MoD).Sarah Butler and her sisters at her Sweet Sixteen party.
